Sometimes the landscape creates its own color palette
Kayaking is one of our favorite ways to spend time outdoors, and this photograph was taken during a trip to Carter’s Lake, Georgia. We had pulled our kayaks onto shore and climbed a small hill when I looked back and was immediately struck by the scene below.
Our colorful kayaks rested against the warm Georgia clay and rocky shoreline, surrounded by the brilliant blues of the lake and sky. It was one of those moments when I stopped thinking about where we were headed next and simply wanted to capture what was right in front of me.
From Photograph to Art
The colors were what originally drew me to the photograph—the bright kayaks, earthy shoreline, deep blue water, and open sky already created a wonderful contrast.
In transforming the photograph into art, I wanted to build on that natural palette rather than reinvent it. Richer color, texture, and painterly movement give the scene more energy while preserving what I loved about the original: our kayaks waiting at the edge of a beautiful Georgia lake and the promise of getting back out on the water.
