Sunlit Lizard on a Weathered Board

Sometimes the best subjects are the ones you almost walk past

While on a family vacation in Charleston, South Carolina, we were walking along a trail when we came to a small bridge—and found this little guy simply hanging out in the sun.

The lizard immediately caught my attention, but it was the whole scene that made me reach for my camera. I loved the contrast of this tiny bit of life against the texture and lines of the weathered boards. Together, the subject, light, and composition turned an ordinary trail encounter into something worth stopping for.

From Photograph to Art

The original photograph already had many of the elements I look for—the character of the lizard, the strong diagonal composition, and all that wonderful texture in the aging wood.

In transforming it into art, I wanted to preserve those elements while giving them a more expressive quality. Painterly texture and color bring new energy to the weathered boards, while the little green lizard remains the unexpected star of the piece.
